From what it looks like, I started my website design journey for 2 reasons:
And while both of those are somewhat true, I almost feel as though the idea of website design came to me. Sounds weird but stay with me.
When I lost my personal training job a year ago I had absolutely 0 idea how I was going to make money. Remote training was hot but most of my client’s weren’t that into it at the time. I mean I don’t blame them, we were in the middle of a freakin pandemic. And while everyone was out there receiving their unemployment for financial support, this girl (me) was not. Because I lived in Jersey but my now-former-job was in PA I was flagged for fraud which held off any unemployment (up until a month ago). So it’s no surprise when I say I was at my very bottom.
My boyfriend and his cousin were also personal trainers who lost their jobs in the pandemic, so we all decided to try and get a grip on remote training and start our own business.
Well, what’s a business without a website, huh!? (do you see where this is going?)
With zero website design knowledge in my back pocket I decided to take a whack at it because why not. This was the first website I created and I made it through Wix. And if you know me, you know I beef with Wix for many reasons and this was one of them.
It probably took a total of 2 months to create this damn site. All the way from getting the branding together, to the business name and putting it all together on one giant website. And let me tell you, when we launched it people were impressssed by it (and no, they it wasn’t just my friends and family LOL).
After hearing the recognition and support after creating something we found super amazing at the time, I began to think. I sat back and thought to myself, “wow, for having no previous design background I’m actually pretty good at this and actually really enjoyed it.”
And if it wasn’t obvious enough, I did my due diligence and researched the absolute hell out of it. From social media strategy to my business name to what the best platform to use was, I spent months figuring out how I was going to turn this into a business of mine.
I was so excited and nervous all at the same time and if you remember from me being at rock bottom before, I had everything to gain and NOTHING TO LOSE.
Luckily I came across the design platform Showit through this girl Becca Luna’s TikTok page who advocated left and right for it. So I did what anyone would do and signed up for their 14 day free trial and made myself a website. Again, still had little experience in what a proper website should have and need but hey whatever, we out here tryna make moves. Within those 2 weeks I came out with my own website, created about 3 other website mock-ups to put on my website as portfolio pieces and launched it in November 2020.
And truth is, I’ve never looked back.
Why? Because I’m in love with the freedom. I’m in love with the ability to create my own schedule and rely on my own work ethic to get me where I want to go. I don’t have a to depend on anyone, except for the wifi to be on it’s A game everyday, but that’s besides the point.
I lost my stable, full-time job because of Covid but came back 100x stronger because I truly had no choice. And in a way this past year changed who I am as a person and as much as I wish Covid never happened I can confidently say I can find some positive in it.
I’m not sure where this next year is going to take me but as long as I have something to do with it, I know it’s going to take me pretty damn far.
